Sarasota is a beautiful destination but can put a ding in the pocketbook quickly. There are a ton of activities to do in the area, and some that won’t break the bank. Check out these fun and free things to do in Sarasota.
Siesta Key Beach
Siesta Key Beach has been awarded Best Beach in the United States by the Travel Channel, Dr. Beach and Tripadvisor. It’s highly popular because of the blinding white, quartz-crystal sand. Even if you aren’t one to sun-bathe all day or swim in the ocean, this beach deserves a stroll. The colorful lifeguard stands are great backdrops for photos. Also noteworthy is the fact that you can park for free at Siesta Key Beach, which is rare in Florida.
Community Drum Circle
If you are in Sarasota on a Sunday, head over to Siesta Key Beach an hour before sunset and check out the “hippie” Community Drum Circle. Members of the community and tourists get involved in this weekly ritual with singing, dancing and even chanting to the beat of the drums. You can find the drum circle between lifeguard stands 3 and 4 on Siesta Key Beach.
Unconditional Surrender Statue
One of the most popular places to visit in Sarasota is the Unconditional Surrender Statue. The statue of a United States Navy Sailor kissing a nurse is a famous icon depicting the end of WWII. While this statue is often plagued by graffiti and occasional protests, it’s still iconic. It is free to enter and view the Unconditional Surrender Statue in Sarasota and can be a fun background for photos.
Ringling Museum of Art
The museum is $25 a person, but admission is free on Mondays. John Ringling collected unusual works from around the globe. He turned part of his home into a museum, which you can visit. Even if you aren’t much into museums, or even art, head over to the grounds and wander around as they are quite opulent. The Ca’ d’Zan building is the most impressive in the complex. John hired a New York architect to build a Venetian Gothic-style palace on the water. The house is 36,000 square feet and has 41 rooms and 15 bathrooms. It cost him a staggering 1.5 million dollars back in 1924.
