Shark Took Hunting at Venice Beach
A highly popular pastime in the area is hunting for fossilized shark teeth and the best place to do this is only 20 miles from Sarasota. A bountiful cache wash up along the beaches of Venice and Manasota Key every year for barefooted beachcombers to find and keep. One of the most idyllic places to begin your search is at the Venice Fishing Pier at Brohard Park. Take a walk out on the scenic 740-foot pier and stop at Papa’s Bait Shop. There you can rent or buy the “Venice Snow Shovel,” the screened basket fitted onto a handle to help you dig shark teeth. Shark teeth sizes can range from 1/8″ – 3.5″or more. Happy hunting!
Kayaking at Lido Key Mangrove Tunnels
A trek through the mangrove tunnels at Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach Nature Park will give kayakers a unique trek through a hidden ecosystem. Crystal clear water let you see fish swim just inches away and crabs scurrying along the exposed mangrove roots at eye-level. A map at the onset of the course directs you to follow the numbered paths, which will lead you back to your origin. Enjoy a paddle through this private tunnel of natural Florida beauty. If you don’t have your own kayak or paddleboard, there are also a variety of companies that rent them, and/or give tours directly from this location, including Kayaking SRQ Tours & Rentals.
Bird Watching at Oscar Scherer State Park
This park’s large acreage of scrubby flatwoods makes it one of the best places in southwest Florida to view Florida scrub-jays, an imperiled species found only in Florida. The birds are abundant in this 1,381-acre park. The bald eagle is also abundant at the park and a truly thrilling experience if you’ve never seen one in the wild before. This is a great park for a picnic, biking, canoeing or camping – which are available to do year-round. Visitors looking for wildlife will find that early and late in the day are the best times. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle along South Creek, a tidal blackwater stream, which flows to a nearby bay. Canoes and kayaks can be rented.
A visitor center has exhibits and videos about the park’s plants and wildlife. Fifteen miles of trails provide solitude, beauty, challenge and a healthy adventure for everyone.
Historic Spanish Point
Nestled in sleepy Osprey, this verdant oasis is rich with thousands of years of human history, from ancient settlers to a Chicago socialite. History buffs love walking the trails through archeological history and shell middens, but this peninsula park also offers a one-of-a-kind view of Sarasota Bay. Today guests can view the Webb Packing House, Pioneer Cemetery, Mary’s Chapel and Guptill House. Webb Packing House showcases the citrus packing and shipping business the homesteader’s started. A quick jaunt to Mary’s Chapel gives visitor’s an opportunity to ring the church bell and pay respect to the Webb family in the adjoining cemetery. A fully restored two-story wooden home, Guptill House, rests atop what we now know is the remains of a shell pyramid. The home is decorated in the style of the time, and visitors can examine the fine craftsmanship of the pioneer builders.
