New Orleans is a great city with lots of history and culture.  There is so much to see and do, but it doesn’t have to break the bank or your pocketbook.  Here are some great free things to do while you explore the city.

1.  Explore Jackson Square

Jackson Square New OrleansOne of New Orleans most famous locations and the home to St. Louis Cathedral is Jackson Square.  Stroll the paths, catch live street performances or just sit and people watch all for free on this bustling street.  Lined with historic buildings like the Cabildo and home to a statue of US President Andrew Jackson, this square is not to be missed.  This square is also an interesting place to watch artists at work, browse local art and pick up souvenirs.  Start at the main entrance on Decatur Street.

2.  Walk the French Quarter

French Quarter New Orleans

Start at the Visitor Center at 419 Decatur Street and join a ranger led river front walk Tuesday through Saturday.  At the center you can also learn about the history of the city and about the architecture.  There are also exhibits about Hurricane Katrina and the effects on the area.  Pick up a free self-guided walking tour map of the French Quarter and head out on your own to explore.

3.  Shop in the French Market

This vibrant and colorful open-air market has a fascinating history.  While you may not want to shop, browsing the stalls is just an entertaining.  The location is home to retail shops, a farmers’ market and a flea market.  The market also often hosts special events throughout the year.

4.  Visit Germaine Cazenave Wells Mardi Gras Museum

Mardi Gras Museum

Located above Arnaud’s Restaurant, this museum shows off the elaborate masks, gowns and other memorabilia associated with Mardi Gras.  There are more than two dozen lavish costumes, 13 queen costumes, four king costumes and six children’s costumes on display.  Open seven days a week during restaurant hours.

5.  Walk the Garden District

Garden District

The Garden District is known as “uptown” with many well-established and well-landscaped homes.  The St. Charles car line offers a fun and inexpensive was to visit the area, although it is free to walk and explore this area and all of the neighborhoods.  A car isn’t required.  Along the streets you will find shops, restaurants and cemeteries to explore.
