Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian
This is one of the biggest parties of the year and it’s held annually in January. This is the largest festival in Puerto Rico with thousands of locals and visitors descending on Old San Juan to PARTY by day and by night. It is attended by hundreds of thousands of people, who are very much part of the entertainment scene. Everyone else hits the streets. The San Se Festival has evolved over time, though it still is full of tradition and Puerto Rican cultural heritage. Mostly, it is a great big party, with people enjoying every aspect of it.
During the multi-day celebration, Old San Juan is completely taken over by live music, impromptu dancing on every street corner, and even circus performances! At daytime, the old city’s plazas and streets are filled with local artists and artisans, showcasing and selling everything from paintings to hand-made jewelry. Once the sun goes down, multiple concerts and parties take place across the walled city, and the joyous revelry continues into the late hours of the night.
Festival del Frio
This family friendly festival of cold is held annually in February. The annual Festival del Frio de Adjuntas takes place in the coldest town in Puerto Rico. Temperatures as low as 40 degrees (F) have been recorded in this sleepy mountain town. The first festival was held in 2009 as a way to enjoy the natural surroundings of the area. This unique festival attracts more than 20,000 visitors who often camp for the event. It starts at night around the pool area of the Parador Villas Sotomayor. A nature walk the next morning ends with breakfast. During the day, enjoy live music, local artisans and more until midnight.
Festival National Indigena
This annual festival held in November celebrates indigenous roots and influence. The folk festival takes place in picturesque Jayuya town, surrounded by Cerro La Punta and Los Tres Pichachos mountains. Festival Indigena is specifically focused on Taíno culture and heritage. The Jayuya region of the country is testament to this legacy, being the home of the Taino tribe that resided on the islands before the Spanish discovered it. The region is also home to the tallest peak in the country. The festival celebrates the legacy of the Taino tribe and their traditions. A traditional ceremony alongside a ball game and a costume pageant are amongst the main highlights of the festival.
Festival de las Mascaras de Hatillo
Puerto Rico closes out the year with Festival de las Mascaras de Hatillo which is their April Fool’s Day. One of the most vibrant annual festivals in Puerto Rico, Festival de las Máscaras de Hatillo (Hatillo Mask Festival), is always held on December 28th. On this day, Puerto Rico commemorates Día de Los Santos Inocentes, dedicated to infant boys under the age of three who were murdered by King Herod soldiers when he was looking for baby Jesus. Thus, these innocent children were called the first Christian martyrs.
The town of Hatillo, located on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, has been celebrating this holiday since 1823. It gradually evolved into a massive festival of humor and disguise, an equivalent of European April’s Fools. Thousands of people are dressing up in the most incredible costumes and masks to parade the streets alongside flamboyant floats and elaborately decorated cars.
