Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky and has a lot to offer in the way of tourist attractions, food and live entertainment. If you are looking to indulge for a day or two however with little or no expense, try out these free things to do in Frankfort, Kentucky.
Tour Buffalo Trace Distillery
Buffalo Trace bottles some of the most sought-after bourbons in the US and they offer free tours. Make reservations ahead of time and as far in advance as possible as their tours are always full. You get to do a tasting at the end of your tour. They are known for their Pappy Van Winkle, Elijah Craig 18 yr, Blanton’s, William Larue Weller 12 yr, and about a dozen or so others too numerous to list. They also have other spirits at the store as well as bar ware and other items! Before or after your tour take some time and wander around the grounds, which are beautiful, and stop in the large gift shop.
Visit the Frankfort Cemetery
The grave of Daniel Boone and his wife Rebecca, which has been open for more than 150 years, is the biggest draw at this cemetery. If you stand by his grave you can get a beautiful view of the new capitol building and Kentucky River down below. There are also a couple of ginkgo trees that are truly colorful during the fall. It’s not a large cemetery but certainly worth a short drive from downtown Frankfort.
Tour the New Capitol
This is a beautiful capitol building – inside and outside. The interior is grand with marble everywhere and some nice murals tucked in the corners of the vast rotunda. Set aside at least an hour to explore this grand building. Although it is a bit smaller than some around the country, it makes up for it with the stunning beauty of all the marble! The officers at the entrance security are very helpful to direct you and answer any questions. You can choose a self-guided or guided tour. During the spring, all of the tulips are in bloom, so spend some time on the grounds as well.
Josephine Sculpture Park
Josephine Sculpture Park is free and open every day from dawn until dusk. Explore nearly 50 contemporary sculptures created by artists from across the globe. Enjoy hands-on activities and exhibitions, scavenger hunts and self guided tours daily. Walking paths are mowed through the native meadows and may be difficult for manual wheelchairs. Josephine Sculpture Park a grass-roots, non-profit organization with a mission to provide community arts education and creative experiences while conserving the beauty of Kentucky’s native, rural landscape. Entry into the park is free, but donations are appreciated.
